Inclusion Means Inclusion: Disability in Leadership

What is a Roundtable Session?

Our roundtable sessions offer a chance to dive into a topic with an expert presenter, or team of presenters. They provide an opportunity to dig deeply into a particular topic during a 90 to 120-minute presentation.

Description

Counselors are ethically obligated to be culturally competent in their work with others; however, disability often is overlooked as an important component of diversity in counselor training, professional development, social justice, and leadership. Though ableism in the field of counseling will be addressed, this presentation will emphasize the benefits of promoting disability inclusion in practice, community, and professional leadership. Participants will explore disability competencies and best practice approaches for enlisting and engaging people with disabilities in program and organizational leadership.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will identify attitudinal and environmental barriers to disability inclusion in counseling leadership.

  2. Participants will identify how ableism occurs and strategies for disrupting and resisting ableism.

Presenter Bio

Christine Sacco Bene

Christine Sacco-Bene, PhD, LMHC, NCC, CRC

Christine Sacco-Bene, PhD, LMHC, NCC, CRC (she/her) is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Program at the University of South Carolina. Prior to working in counselor education, Sacco-Bene worked at a Center for Independent Living and as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Virginia and Florida. She has served on the Executive Boards of the Florida Counseling Association and the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association.
