Work Table- May 19th, 2021

Work Table Focus: Qualitative Methods

TCR is pleased to offer the following Work Table sessions to provide participants consultation, peer review, and a space to process and metabolize their projects in development. This is a space for early career researchers to seek feedback and input regarding their research projects (e.g., design, questions, conceptualization, challenges), agenda, concerns, specific writing challenges, and so forth.

Research mentors for the above session:

Dr. Debbie Sturm is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Professor at James Madison University in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. She has graduate coursework, training, and teaching in environmental advocacy, environmental education, climate resilience efforts, environmental justice, and nature connection. Her research interests involve climate change and mental health, environmental justice and climate-informed disaster response, and advocacy related to climate justice. She has experience with both qualitative and quantitative research and has worked closely with doctoral students on conceptualization and research design.

Karli Fleitas is a first-year doctoral student in the Counseling and Supervision program at James Madison University. She held a research assistant position during her master’s program in clinical mental health counseling and has participated in qualitative research design during her doctoral program. She coded qualitative interviews for a grounded theory study and is always open to upcoming research opportunities. Karli is excited to collaborate with fellow counseling colleagues on ideas, questions, and wonderings regarding qualitative inquiry, in addition to connecting with other researchers in the counseling profession.

Dr. Charles F. Shepard has conducted qualitative grounded theory research that applies to clinical and educational topics at the forefront of critical issues in professional counseling and counselor education. In February of 2021, Dr. Shepard successfully defended his dissertation entitled Informing Consent: A Grounded Theory Study of Parents of Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth Seeking Gender-Confirming Endocrinological Interventions. In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Shepard maintains a clinical practice that includes couples and family counseling as well as clinical supervision of graduate students and post-graduate residents in counseling.

Guidelines for the Work Table events

  • No-fee, one-time mentoring/consultation offered by experienced researchers/writers.

  • Duration: 1.5 – 2.0 hours.

  • Work Table research mentors follow the latest ACA Code of Ethics. They will not claim authorship for projects and ideas participants bring to the Work Table session.

  • Work Table research consultants will not provide consultation on dissertation projects.

  • Work Table participants come to the session with specific research methodology/writing questions, not expecting their questions to be fully answered. Work Table is a space for processing and diving deeper to clarify and metabolize their research. Participants will be asked to indicate specific questions or needs they will bring to the session when they register for the session.

  • Each session will be limited to 5 participants to allow time for deeper and meaningful interactions.

  • Pre-registration for the session is required. TCR will send registered individuals a Zoom invite at least 24 hours before the event.
